Type Locality and Naming

Along Almurad Mountain, South-Western Gissar. N.P. Kheraskov, 1934 (487, p.18). In the Bukhara-Karshinsky region, well exposed. Stratotype at r. Almurad. Middle formation in the Takchiyan Gr. Included in the Almurad horizon (55; 115; 133; 167; 274; 362; 415; 445; 498).

Synonym: Almurad Suite, Алмурадская св.


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is predominantly three-membered in structure.

At the bottom - clays, siltstone (aleurolites), reddish-brown sandstones with gypsum interlayers;

Middle part - marls, dolomites, bluish-gray clays, in the north (Lyangar, Chakchar, Machay) - reddish-brown clays, siltstone (aleurolites), gypsums with interlayers of gray sandstones and gravelites;

At the top - siltstone (aleurolites), reddish-brown clays with gypsum interlayers.

In the Babatag Ridge, the formation is composed of reddish-brown clays with gypsum interlayers.

Thickness 36-195m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lies conformably, locally transgressively on the Karabil Fm

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Kyzyltash Fm.

Regional extent

Southwestern, Southern Gissar, Babatag Ridge.

Contains marine bivalve mollusks - Lima tombeckiana Orb., Pterotrigonia caudata (Ag.), Astarte beamonti Orb.; ostracods - Malzevia ex gr. pellucida (And.).
